FDA’s Approved Dietary Cannabinoid

May 28, 2017

Atalo’s proprietary, certified, internationally pedigreed hemp seed stock for CBD production produces a full-spectrum crop rich in terpenes, such as ß-caryophyllene, an FDA approved dietary cannabinoid. As Atalo chairman Andrew Graves says, “Like a fine Kentucky bourbon, ingredients matter.”

Data published in the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health identifies ß-caryophyllene as a functional, non-psychoactive CB2 receptor ligand in foodstuff and as a macrocyclic anti-inflammatory cannabinoid in Cannabis. (1) This is clearly a step forward in recognizing full-spectrum CBD as a functional food.

ß-caryophyllene is a naturally occurring bicyclic sesquiterpene that is seen as a major composition of many essential oils. This compound is found especially in the oil extracted from cloves, rosemary, hops and hemp. (2)

As an FDA approved food additive and the first dietary cannabinoid, ß-caryophyllene is the primary terpene that contributes to the spiciness of black pepper and also a major terpene in cloves, hops, rosemary, and hemp.(2) What makes ß-caryophyllene chemically unique is its inclusion of a cyclobutane ring, which is a rarity in nature and makes it an attractive candidate for biotech research. Some cyclobutanes have already found medical uses, such as the chemotherapy drug Carboplatin. As BCP has also been shown to have cancer fighting properties it could be viable candidate for new chemotherapy drugs. (3)

Caryophyllene isn’t only unique for being a cyclobutane, it is unique for being both a terpene and a dietary cannabinoid (1), a foodstuff that acts as a cannabinoid and binds to CB2 receptors and triggers the body’s endo-cannabinoid receptors. (6)

The same 2008 study which first identified caryophyllene as a cannabinoid, also found it had numerous potential medicinal benefits (1), and further studies reported by the NIH have identified BCP as an analgesic (5), anti-oxidant (7), anti-inflammatory(8), and as a possibility in the treatment of anxiety and depression (5).

Clearly, the scientific evidence for the efficacy of full-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD is growing fast. At the Hemp Research Campus, in Winchester, Kentucky, Atalo strives for consistency and quality from the ground up as seed scientists, growers and processors work together to create a catalog of robust, full-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD products, which can be described as “functional foods,” says William Hilliard, CEO, Atalo Holdings, Inc.

The words of Hippocrates, spoken 2,500 years ago, ring true today. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”(9).
